Precisely Women in Technology: Meet Nidhi

At Precisely, recognizing individuality is a key value of our organization. This week, we’re introducing you to Nidhi Ram, Precisely’s Sr. Director, Customer Experience. Based in New Jersey, Nidhi has built a 19-year career in technology and is a member of our Precisely Women in Technology program.

How did you get into the technology field?

I went to college with an intention to study biomedical engineering. I ended up changing gears when I took a C programming class freshman year and loved it. Logically working through really challenging problems and seeing immediate results had me hooked! While I do not do much coding anymore, what keeps me engaged and interested in the technology field is problem solving, which is still something I get to do every single day.

Who has had the greatest impact on your career?

Customers! I started my career in Technical Support and experienced early on the satisfaction of seeing technology in action: helping someone move data which is a key component of a financial process, assisting with solving a piece of a health care problem, or contributing towards a solution that helps a government run. It makes the work we do so much more relevant when we know it has far-reaching impacts on the systems that run our world and the people in it. That feeling of making a difference for our clients is what has kept me working with customers and leading customer-facing teams throughout my entire career.

What do you love most about technology?

There is never a dull day, and there is always something new to learn. I love the rapid change and progress in this field and its endless possibilities to make our lives better, healthier, connected, efficient, the list goes on. In times like this pandemic, it is hard to imagine where we would be if we did not have technology to bring us together.

How have you managed to create work/life balance throughout your career?

While work/life balance is something that all of us should focus on for our own well-being and productivity, it really came into focus for me after having kids, where this balance impacted not only me but those who depended on me. What I learned is that being limited by time can sometimes be a blessing – you approach the task with a laser focus and a commitment to get it done.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Never stop learning. There is a podcast I like called the Moth, and their tag line is “Either have a good time or have a good story”. I like to adapt that to “Either do it well or learn from it”. Challenging tasks, situations, and even personalities are all opportunities to grow. It is a simple perspective that puts the focus on getting better, rather than taking setbacks as failures, or feedback as disapproval. Easier said than done – but I have kept this perspective in mind as I have progressed in my career to leadership roles and taken on new challenges.

What are your hopes for other women in the technology field?

As a girl mom, my hopes for women in technology are personal – I want to leave my daughter and all of the smart young girls who have so much to contribute, a more equitable world than the one we live in today. A long way to go, but it starts with supporting each other and encouraging the next generation. Initiatives like Precisely’s Women in Technology bring the challenges women face into focus, allow us to have a dialog, and provide a network we can lean on for guidance. Kudos to female leaders like our CTO Tendu, Yoğurtçu, our SVP of Support and Customer Experience, Romea Smith, as well as women I look up to in my personal life who use their success to set an example and raise up the next generation of leaders. I am hopeful for our future.
